The club and golf course:
The club was founded in 1965. In the beginning the club got some small piece of land from the town council at the eastern part of the town near by the towns forest service. Year later after the club was founded, the club got some more land and could build 6 hole golf course and the course was given the name Gardar. In 1969 the club got more land and a new 9 hole golf course was build that year. A young man, Hannes Thorsteinsson, only 17 years old, designed the golf course. Later he became Iceland´s most famous golf designer. In 1996 the club started to work on the extension of the golf course and a new 18 hole golf course was inaugurated in the year 2000.

Akranes golf course is located in the town Akranes about 40 minutes drive from Reykjavik. The golf course is built on rather flat land with rocky hills, bunkers, water and trees which makes the course demanding and interesting. Akranes golf course, which is one of the two 18-hole golf course in the western part of the country, is renowned for its beautiful and interesting surroundings, good upkeep and excellent putting greens. The golf course is considered one of the better tournament golf course in the country.
