The club and golf course:
The Fludir golf club was founded in 1985. The first 9 hole golf course was built on a farmland by the river Litla Laxá near the town Fludir. In 2001 the course was enlarged to 18 hole course and a new club house opened. Forestation has always played an important role in the golf club´s activity.
When the club was founded in 1985, the golf course was solely built by voluntary work. The old club house was opened in 1988 and offered light meals, coffee and soup.
In 1990 the club house was expanded and became more of a restaurant/pizzeria, offering pizzas, grill etc. In 1997 the owners of the farm ceased farming and decided to use the land to expand the course.
The old barns are now used for the machinery and in June 2001 a new large club house was opened. It can host 140 people and offers hot and cold meals for individuals and large groups. The restaurant is a pizzeria and is known for its great pizzas, which are completely homemade and baked with Icelandic cheese only. That same day in June 2001 the new 18 hole course was opened. Since then many improvements have taken place and many more will be in the future, as the golf course is an “ongoing project”.
Foresting has always played a big part of the golf course and in the year 2000 the course began participating in a public project where the goal is to plant trees in the south part of Iceland. Every year around 5.000 trees are being planted on the golf course area.
The number of club members today is around 150 and still growing, mostly people who own summer houses in the area, but also local people from the Fludir area.
Fludir golf course starts with a par 3 hole. To start with a par 3 hole is fun and lowers the “golf shiver” for some golfers. The course is then followed by four par 4 holes that are surrounded by low trees. To use the driver off the tee is not always the best choice, some players say it´s wiser to use the iron to place the ball better on the fairways. On hole nr. 6 the golfer hits the ball from the tee which is placed on a hill. The view is spectacular, but it´s better to concentrate on the stroke as the fairway is cut by an estuary, near the green.
The next two holes are quite different, hole nr. 7 is a short one but with old water channel by the green, and nr. 8 is the longest one, 508 meters from the yellow tee and 419 meters from the red tee. Trees are again a major factor on those holes. The last hole, before you enter the club house for a break, is a tricky par 3 as it lies up a hill, where the green is placed on a narrow area. The bunker to the left of the green which is not the best place to land as you will be faced with a grass wall when trying to hit the ball up on the green. So, an iron accuracy is what you need on this hole.
The latter half of the course is placed on the old 9 hole course. It starts with a par 4 hole which has a pond midway on the fairway, so it´s better to hit the ball not too far. Nr. 11 is a short par 3 hole with five small bunkers behind the green. The next hole offers you a good birdie chance if the drive is a good one. Nr. 13 is the first hole which lies along the river “Litla-Laxá”. On the tee you have to hit the ball over the river and on to the fairway. Preparing the drive, don´t think about the number of the hole, 13, just go for it! Nr. 14 is a par 3 hole with two hazards on the way, a deep bunker to the left and a pond to the right. Just hit the ball between those two hazards and you will be fine!
Next hole is a “dog leg” to the right with the river running along the right side of the fairway. It´s a par 5 hole with a chance of birdie if you hit the ball well over the turn of the fairway. Nr. 16 is a par 3 hole where the green lies on the riverside. If you hit the ball too long here, you´re out of bounce! The last two holes are long, nr. 17 which is a par 5 hole and nr. 18 is a par 4, both with trees along both sides. On those two holes you need to keep the ball out of the trees and on the fairway, at all times!
After a good match you can relax in the clubhouse where you can enjoy a good meal and a drink, of course. |
